Mlibo urges action after WL chaos

- By MALIBONGWE DAYIMANI

DISCIPLINARY processes should be instituted against members of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) who were part of the chaotic regional general council in Ntabankulu at the weekend, ANC provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said yesterday.

Police used rubber bullets to break up two ANCWL factions that clashed on Sunday during the league meeting.

As a result of the physical fighting, three assault cases were opened at Mount Ayliff police station and a woman was rushed to a local clinic after a punch-up between the factions of the ANCWL.

No one has been arrested, police spokesman Captain Mlungisi Matidane said.

Qoboshiyane criticised both the ANCWL and the ANC Youth League for bringing the party into disrepute by having physical fights at their gatherings.

“Physical fights, insults, breaking public property, causing injury, all are disciplinary issues and ANC will not tolerate any of its members crossing the line.

“Discipline is going to be enforced. It is the ANC Women’s League that must rein [in] its members who disrupt constitutional meetings and make a determination based on the submissions.

“As the ANC we cannot prescribe both the manner and approach at this stage.”

Meanwhile, ANCWL provincial secretary Nolitha Ntobongwana dismissed comments by one of her comrades who claimed shots had been fired.

Ntobongwana denied that the fight had broken out because the two factions could not agree on who the league should support for the ANC provincial chairmanship – incumbent Phumulo Masualle or provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane.

She said the fight was over the functionality of the league in the region.

Ntobongwana said the special RGC meeting, which was attended by national working committee member Pinky Kekana and national executive committee member Mamkhize Xaba, was convened to appoint a new Alfred Nzo regional task team (RTT).

“It is the people who were against the appointment of the new RTT who caused all the chaos.”

Ntobongwana said the old RTT appointed in August 2014 had failed to take the region to the elective conference.

She said the old RTT members who revolted against the new appointment threw oranges and stones at her and national leaders.

“Luckily none of the missiles hit us. We can’t have an RTT that is not functional.”

Matidane confirmed yesterday that the police were still investigating three cases of common assault and that no one has been arrested.

“The investigation is still under way for the three cases. No more cases were opened yesterday.” —
