Jegels comes back with a bang
EAST LONDON golden girl Leighandre Jegels returned to the ring after completing her university degree to knock out Tanzanian Fatuma Yazidu in two rounds of their ANA Pan African flight title at Mdantsane Indoor Centre yesterday.
Jegels, who is also a karate champion, never wasted time to launch her offence against her outgunned foe.
With former world champion and fight strategist Welcome Ncita in her corner, the 23-year old local lass recaptured her form as she pummeled her opponent with ruthlessness.
Switching her attack from body to the head, Jegels pinned Yazidu in the corner where she unleashed breathtaking salvo forcing the referee to call off proceedings.
Former SA title challenger Sithembiso Faye’ s career continued to flounder when he lost a split decision to unheralded Mbulelo Dyani in their bantamweight clash.
Moving up a division after his documented suffering when his challenge for the national junior bantamweight title was downgraded three times, Faye appeared to have lost his hunger with his timing woeful.
But he managed to drop Dyani in the second round but continued to eat unnecessary punches in return.
Despite the difference in class, Dyani was able to score with crisp punches even delving on clowning.
Faye finally came on strong in the last two rounds when he dug the body.
But only one of the judges appreciated his late rally although he appeared to be unfortunate to be on the receiving end of the decision.
The loss capped a dismal run for Faye who showed plenty of promise until his title aspirations were dealt a blow by the bureaucratic red tape.
When he finally got the opportunity his mind was no longer in the game leading to a loss to the current champion Lindile Tshemese.
In another clash of the well attended development tournament by promotional debutant Mecca Promotions, Mfusi Maxhayi made his long awaited return to the ring as a featherweight and appeared set to succumb to the mini storm waged by Limpopo’s Ephraim Chauke only to use his underrated toughness to come through the haze and started to dish out a merciless pounding on his way to a well deserved unanimous points win with scores of 5856 and 59-55 twice.
Asanele Zazini won over four rounds over Azile Nkwanka (minifly); Kunga Fuzani drew over four rounds with Lihle Gingxana (Jnr feather). At the time of going to print Lwandile Sityatha was yet to step in the ring for his clash against Cleutus Mbhele.
