Last year in the corresponding fixture held in EL, Border also trailed at halftime and despite dominating the second half lost the match, this time around however it was a different outcome as Border upped the ante in the second period, managing to take the lead and then shut WP out for the victory.

Border flank Lusanda Dumke dotted down for a five-pointer, while the difference between the sides came from the boot of Border fullback Elousie Webb who knocked over the conversion and slotted a penalty to give the team a five-point win.

“I always knew it was going to be a tough match and it was, so I was very proud of the ladies for getting the win, they proved that they know how to play under pressure and well done to them,” said Kolonza. “The field was a bit heavy underfoot as it had been raining in Cape Town the days before, but we are used to those conditions, so it didn’t faze us and we just went about our business.”

Border will now turn their focus to their next match of the competition against KZN in Durban in two weeks time and they will be looking to take another big step towards finishing top of the log.

With them sitting on 14 points, three ahead of WP, they only need to win their last two games to guarantee top spot.

“We are hoping to host the final at home, so we are looking to our next game against KZN and we want to come away with a full house of points from that and then if we can beat Free State in our last pool match we will finish on top of the log,” said Kolonza.

“We are confident we can do it and we must just keep playing at the top of our game.”

In the other A division match on the weekend EP women outscored KZN five tries to two to claim a solid 30-14 win in PE.
