Iconic race set to put city on the map

- By BOB NORRIS

EAST London, or more specifically in this case the greater Buffalo City, becomes the focus of attention in the sports tourism world through specific events.

Sports tourism is a huge money spinner, often not taken seriously enough in the local business world.

Running, particularly on the road, has traditionally boosted the hospitality industry, with a race like the Buffalo Marathon having attracted many of the biggest road running names in the land to the city.

The Legends Marathon has taken up the challenge to showcase the city to both ultra marathon runners through their 68km run from Bisho to East London and the 21.1km or half marathon distance being run on South Africa’s fastest ever half marathon course.

Ten and 5km events, on routes yet to be disclosed, will be added to a day.

The race will be run on Sunday, September 24.

It is certain that not only numbers but quality too will be on display in both the 68km and the 60:11 half marathon component.

I spoke to a number of top male and female runners this week and they agreed to admit they will be running as long as their names remain under wraps for now. Obviously once the entry is in it will be open season.

If they do all arrive in the city in good racing shape we can all expect fireworks along the route and at the Orient Beach finish.

Putting ones dreams and goals out into the public domain stimulates a runners prospects. That is the way that it is, so put it out there and chase a time. — DDC
