Bay B blow Old Boys off court

THE Beacon Bay B team caused a upset by beating Old Selbornians 3-1 in the first tennis league.

Matches were even after the first round when Grant Stuart and Cherie Biggs defeated Lester Barkhuyzen and Kim O’Leary 6-1, 6-2 and the Ryan Little/Jenny Milne duo beat left-handers Robert Bell and Sheila Smith 6-4, 6-1.

Bell and Smith won 6-2, 6-2 over the Barkhuyzen/O’Leary partnership.

Stuart and Biggs captured the first set at 6-3 against Little and Milne, only to see the Old Boys pair hitting back to level matters by taking the second at 6-2. Nobody could have forecast what was to happen next. With Beacon Bay B leading 2-1 in matches all depended on the final set which ended in a ding-dong battle. In a first-ever final tiebreaker of 42 points the Beacon Bay pair shoe-horned their way to a 6-3, 2-6, 22-20 victory to give their side a 9-3 win in points.
