ANC shame for double killings
Mabuyane dismay as party implicated in women’s deaths
ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane says the party is “disgraced and shamed to be at the centre” of the killing of two women in East London.
The party’s Buffalo City Metro Ward 13 councillor Nokulunga Matiwane and her husband, Mthuthuzeli, have been charged with the murders.
Mabuyane, accompanied by MEC for safety and liaison Weziwe Tikana, yesterday visited the families of Nomboniso Twana and Nombulelo Mpitipiti who were shot dead last week in Dice, Reeston, allegedly by Mthuthuzeli.
It is alleged that Mthuthuzeli had been collecting R200 a month from the woman in return for being given jobs on the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) by his wife.
Yesterday eight other women told Mabuyane they were living in fear of their lives as they had also been required to pay for EPWP jobs.
They alleged that the conspiracy to kill them involved others in addition to the Matiwanes.
Mabuyane said all “rogues” involved in such an alleged conspiracy must face the full might of the law.
He also pleaded with the Reeston community to exercise restraint after they burnt down councillor Matiwane’s house, in which a physically disabled girl died.
“We are accordingly ashamed and disgraced that the name of the ANC is at the centre of such a cruel act and negativity,” said Mabuyane.
“We want to send our deepest condolences for the loss of your loved ones and add that the ANC will not continue giving power to rogues masquerading as leaders of the people.
“We condemn this with the contempt it deserves and we are pleased that in this case at least there are leads relating to suspects who have a case to answer.”
Mabuyane lamented that what happened in Reeston was “a reflection of a sick society which can only be healed by the divine intervention”.
However, he added, criminal acts within the party and society at large can be curbed by courageous leaders who do not think twice about acting on criminals. —
