Just no stopping the Old Boys

THE first round of cross-pool playoffs of the second tennis league took place on Saturday. The strong Old Boys A side continued to dominate the league beating Gonubie A 10-3. During the league they amassed 31 points of a possible 33.

In their clash against Gonubie A, Justin Sparg partnered Kim O’Leary to straight set victories over the Gareth Fray/Emma Marx and Danie de Vaal/Gill van Niekerk pairs. Brandon Forword and Lorna Grotjohn succumbed to the Fray/Marx combinatio­n on a tiebreaker having squeezed past De Vaal and Van Niekerk on a final set tiebreaker.

The Old Boys B side of Dean Peters, Don Emslie, Wendy Makowem and Di Harrawayre­ached the final after being given a run for their money by Destiny.

Old Boys led 2-0 in matches only to see their opponents stage a magnificen­t comeback almost forcing a draw. Thabo Gwegwana and Thandazile Khwatshube were edged out at 6-3, 0-6, 4-10 by Emslie and Harraway, while Riagan Smith and young Devina Pillay succumbed at 36, 6-1, 6-10 to the Peters/Makowem pairing to make the final score 11-2.

The Beacon Bay B side of Sean Goodwin, Steve Wood, Lynne Green and Mel Davidson gained a 9-3 victory over Gonubie B who were represente­d by Derek Scheckle, Corne Zimmerman, Cristel Dorksen and Pat Proud. They will meet Stirling A for fifth position.

The Stirling A side of Taki Kondylis, Torben Reinke and sisters, Denise Verheul and Vanessa Sweet, proved too strong for their B team of Christo Theart, Carol Oberem, Peter Nel and Bettina Middleton registerin­g an 11-0 victory.

The two Old Boys teams will lock horns in the final on September 9, while Gonubie A and Destiny will fight it out for positions 3/4.

The final fixtures to be played on Saturday September 9 because of the Cradock Challenge this weekend are:

Positions 1-2: Old Boys A v Old Boys B; Positions 3-4: Gonubie A v Destiny; Positions 5-6: Beacon Bay v Stirling A; Positions 7-8: Stirling B v Gonubie B
