Abuse of state vehicles
I WOULD like to get a few answers about government-owned vehicles – all the provincialregistered and branded vehicles.
First of all, is there a tracker fitted? Is there a system in place where these vehicles are signed in and out? Is the driver’s name, ID and licence verified before use of these vehicles?
The purpose for use of the vehicle is hopefully recorded as well as the number and names of passengers conveyed in the vehicle.
On a daily basis we see these government vehicles all over the Eastern Cape. We see them regularly transgressing the traffic laws, such as parking in no parking zones, jumping red robots, exceeding speed limits, overtaking on blind rises, and regularly overloaded with passengers picked up and dropped off along the route of travel.
These vehicles can also be seen over weekends at resorts and fun places such as Kei Mouth, Port Alfred, Port St Johns, Hamburg and well-known Ebuthlanti at Eastern Beach.
Now can anybody tell me if there are systems in place to monitor the aforementioned points, as well as how, and when (if any) disciplinary action is taken against transgressors after a report has been made – but my information from a reliable source is that there are very few prosecutions and penalties for transgressors.
The misuse of state vehicles is mind-boggling and I haven’t touched on fuel and other expenses. I just know that if the transport was privatised and better controlled the government would save millions of rands. — Clive Muller, Hamburg
