UNIVERSITY of Fort Hare (UFH) feel they are on the road to recovery after they managed to only concede two goals during the Varsity Football Tournament where they lost Wits University on Thursday.

UFH has played seven games and lost all of them with high margins and are still at the bottom of the table while Wits have won two and lost five.

They are in seventh place on six 2-1 to points.

UFH team manager Mongi Ngubane said the team was shifting its focus to young blood and was happy.

“We had new players that we were trying out in this game and they were hungry. They wanted to prove themselves and we scored a goal we've been searching for for a very long time.

“The two past games against Tuks and Wits we played very well as compared to our previous games and we had ball possession..’’

He said one of the blunders the team committed was to make wrong substitutions and they paid dearly for that.

“We made stupid, silly mistakes because we were playing a 4-5-1 and Wits a 3-5-2 formation and we managed to hold our back line.

“When we attacked we just lacked numbers up front and it seems most of our guys lack confidence because when they get the ball in front they can't make good decisions.

“Now we are going back the SAB League and soon we are starting with the Nedbank Cup. We have new boys that have something new to add to the team and we are really excited about that.’’

Both sides played exciting football with Wits victorious towards the end with a goal from Baliwe Moyakhe at the Bidvest Stadium.

In the first half both sides were looking for goals and it was the home side that scored first, six minutes into the game to take the lead.

By half-time the score was still 1-0 and the visitors were desperate for a goal but it was not to be.

Solomzi Dinga scored the only goal for UFH through a free kick.
