Sole Destroyer just around corner

- RUNNING By ROSS ROCHE

THE 2017 Sole Destroyer is just more than a week away and with online entries having poured in, it is shaping up to be one of the biggest events so far.

The race is named after legendary East London runner Chris Sole and traverses his favourite tracks from his days as a champion schoolboy runner attending Cambridge over the half marathon route, as well as the 9km Sole Teaser.

Now practising as a physiotherapist in Dunedin, New Zealand – and still winning challenging mountain races and still running barefoot – Sole said this week his bush tracks and rocky climbs of the Horseshoe Valley were “still imprinted” in his mind.

With online entries closed, interested runners can only enter by picking up store entries.

“This year we created an online registration portal and by close of business on Tuesday, close to 400 entries was recorded,” said Dillon Pretorius who is heading the Sole Destroyer organising committee.

“More than 700 runners participated in the 21km half marathon last year and we are confident that this year’s race will attract even larger numbers,” he said.

Entry forms can be collected at various Caltex service stations or downloaded from http://bit.ly/2wxUiyh #CaltexSoleDestroyer.

Registration will take place today from 9am to 12pm, next week Thursday and Friday from 5pm to 7pm, and next week Saturday from 9am to 12pm at the Oxford Striders Club House. No entries accepted on the morning of the race.
