- By POLISWA SEJOSING

SINGER, writer, composer and producer Samthing Soweto will be making his way to East London this weekend for one night only. He will be performing at the September Soul Ntoz show at the Arts Theatre this Sunday, and will be joined by East London’s own Msaki and Vinny Mak.

The September Soul Ntoz event is an initiative of One Shushu Day Concerts. The founder of One Shushu Day Movement, singer Msaki, said they were excited about bringing the talented entertainer to the city.

“I saw Samthing Soweto a few years back performing at the National Arts Festival with The Soil and I enjoyed their show. I got to see him again this year and I thought it would be great to collaborate with him because we are both independent artists.

“He has done so many sold-out shows and I thought it would be great for him to come to East London before he goes to Cape Town,” she said.

Msaki said she would also be sharing some new material.

“I haven’t performed in a while. I will be performing with a small band and trying out some new things. I am excited,” she said.

Samthing Soweto, whose real name is Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba, started his career as one of the founding members of the South African acapella group The Soil. The group released their debut album in 2011, under record label Native Rhythms.

Mdolomba left the group, but is honourably credited for his outstanding vocals, co-writing, composing and producing eight of the 11 songs on the group’s multi platinum-selling self-titled album.

His first solo project was an independently released EP titled This n that without Tempo, which featured a tribute to Mama Miriam Makeba, titled Peace n Lovely Things.

Mdolomba has released two extended plays, and he made a headlining appearance as a solo act at the annual internationally acclaimed Joy of Jazz festival in 2014, representing the “Sounds of Democracy”.

In the same year, he also earned himself a spot on the Rocking the Daisies Festival stage in Cape Town. His music has featured on South African television including the soapie Isidingo and reality blockbuster Big Brother Mzansi.

He also graces the title sequence for the popular e.tv series Rhythm City and appears on the soundtrack for the movie Othello Burning.

The show starts at 5pm and tickets cost R150. For more information, check out the One ShuShu Day Movement Facebook page. —
