REVERED boxing trainer and one of numerous Mzi Mnguni protégès Lunga Sikonyela has called on authorities to assist his mentor to organise a farewell boxing tournament.

Sikonyela made the call after visiting the ailing promoter at his home following his brief hospital stay.

Mnguni is recovering from a heart attack which left him wheelchair bound about three years ago.

He has been going in and out of hospital but in each time he has defiantly refused to succumb to his illness. However, this has not stopped people from posting on social media that he had died after his latest hospital trip.

Sikonyela, who is one of the trainers produced by the legendary promoter from his Eyethu Boxing Club, visited Mnguni to verify the widespread rumours of his death.

“I found him in high spirits,” he said.

“And there is nothing closer to bra Mzi’s heart than boxing. We talked boxing for almost a day because that is what defined him.”

Sikonyela broke away from Eyethu gymnasium to open his own club taking one of Mnguni’s product Ali Funeka with him.

The relationship between Sikonyela’s boxing club, Heavy Duty Boxing Development club and Eyethu is so strong that their fighters help each other when preparing for bouts.

For instance Mnguni’s lone champion Phila Mpontshane benefited from useful sparring from another former Eyethu fighter Xolani
