5FM DJ’s heritage discovery tour

- By PELOKAZI MHLABA

LEGENDARY radio presenter Nick Hamman is on a countrywide mission to learn about all nine provinces’ heritage as part of his heritage tour, which started at the beginning of the month.

The 5FM presenter and producer “Mad Money Mike” made a mark in Bhisho last week on Friday as they were broadcasting live as part of learning more about the vibrant heritage in cities and small towns.

The Hamman Time midmorning presenter said they deemed it critical to do the tour specifically in September as it is recognised as Heritage Month.

Hamman believes people should first know and understand the different cultures in their own province before exploring other countries. He added that the tour looks deeply at the culture, history and sheer beauty of South Africa.

As he was highlighting the importance of culture, attitudes and values, he mentioned that the Eastern Cape was chosen not only for its culture but also for its beautiful diversity and landscape.

“I can say that [the] Eastern Cape is the most beautiful place and very noticed for the amount of history that is stored in various institutions, such as University of Fort Hare. Without this province we wouldn’t have the large portion of the history as part of the tour,” he said.

As they spread their wings from King William’s Town to Port Elizabeth, Hamman said they were looking forward to more exciting moments and to meeting many people they were not expecting to meet.

“I’d like to encourage South Africans to get out and see their beautiful country. There is so much to learn and I think that the more we do that the more we [are] going to support and understand each other.”

Station manager Justine Cullinan said: “The Hamman Time Heritage Tour is an exciting and relevant way to take the 5FM community on a countrywide journey without leaving their jobs and lectures.

“It’s a powerful way to further bring youthful South Africans together through the power of music, which is our purpose at 5FM.”
