Funny men heading back to EL for ‘Comedy Night’

- By POLISWA SEJOSING

THE Comedy Night EL has kept to its promise of bringing the best comics to the city as next week locals can look forward to seeing the likes of Donovan Goliath and Trevor Gumbi headlining.

The comedy night is a partnership between entertainment company Splakavellis Management and Wiseguys Bar and Grill in Vincent.

The event, now in its fourth month, sees the two hosting a comedy show every last Wednesday of the month.

The show features a national headline act and host, a local headline act, and a slot for local comedians to showcase their talent.

Some of the comics that have graced the Wiseguys Bar and Grill stage include Tats Nkonzo, Loyiso Madinga, Prins, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Richelieu Beaunoir and Ntosh Madlingozi.

The month’s host will be Mthatha’s own funnyman Goliath. Goliath – who is known as the white looking, Xhosa speaking, coloured guy from Mthatha – was recently nominated for the You Spectacular Awards for best comedian.

Last month’s event had a slight hiccup when Tol Ass Mo and Lihle Msimang missed their flights, but it went on without them.

Splakavellis Management owner Sheree O’Brien said: “We roped in an additional local act to support Prins and Soso Sigcau and the show was absolute fire. People were not left disappointed by the two acts that could not make it, and one and a half hours later, the audience had still not had enough and were screaming for more.”

She said the outcomes showed that people were no longer coming for the names on the lineup, but for comedy itself. “And that is what the point of Comedy Night EL is about,” O’Brien added.

She said representing the locals would be Zimvo. “He is always a hit with the audience and brings new material every time.”

O’Brien said up-and-coming comedians who would like to try out their material, exercise their craft and network with national talent are encouraged to sign up for the open spot. “There are two fiveminute open spots available at each event. You can do so by e-mailing

Tickets for the show cost R120 and are available through www.quicket.co.za. Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 8pm.
