Donations pour in for ‘mother lioness’

- By TEMBILE SGQOLANA

DONATIONS have continued pouring in from people in South Africa and other countries to help the “mother lioness” who allegedly stabbed to death a man and wounded two others she believed were gang-raping her daughter.

The Zwartwater mother, 56, made headlines when she stormed inside a house to find the three men with her 27-year old daughter early this month.

She then allegedly stabbed all three men, with her actions being hailed as bravery.

Close to R130 000 has been raised to support the woman’s legal defence after she was arrested for murder and two attempted murders.

She yesterday thanked those who offered their financial support.

“I did not even think that people would be offering their support,” she said.

Ordinary citizens and non-governmental organisations have rallied behind her and offered the mother and her daughter both psychological and financial support. The woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her daughter who is an alleged rape victim, is out on R500 bail.

The stabbing happened at an unoccupied house in Qumbu administrative area in Zwartwater near Komani earlier this month.

Cape Town resident Natalie Kendrick said her email account had been flooded by people interested in donating after she started a Facebook page for the “Lion Mama”. “The page has done fantastically more than I imagined.”

Kendrick said she was in contact with the woman’s lawyer, Buhle Tonise, who had set up a trust fund for the donations.
