- By ASANDA NINI

A MAN who kidnapped and repeatedly raped a 10-year old girl last year was this week sentenced to three terms of life imprisonment.

Siyabuza Yanga Dyafta, 26, of King William’s Town was sentenced to a maximum of 75 years in jail by the Bhisho High Court as the three life terms of 25 years each will not run concurrently.

He will serve a minimum of 37 years and six months if he qualifies for his full parole.

On Wednesday he was also sentenced to an effective eight years for kidnapping and assault but that will run concurrently with the three life terms.

Dyafta, repeatedly raped the then 10-year-old in Kwelerhane village last October, before assaulting community members who wanted to rescue the girl.

Yesterday King William’s Town police spokeswoman Captain Siphokazi Mawisa said the young girl had been sent to the local shop when Dyafta kidnapped her.

“Her family, together with some community members, went to search for her after she did not come back home from the shop.

“When they found him, the suspect assaulted some of those community members who had tracked and found him in a nearby house,” Mawisa said.

She added that Dyafta managed to get away from the angry mob, and dragged the little girl with him to his nearby home.

“When the community members later approached his home, he fled on foot and the little girl, who had been raped numerous times, was rescued.”

Mawisa said Dyafta handed himself over to Izele police a few days after the gruesome incident.

“He first appeared at the Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court and was granted R500 bail.

“The case was then transferred to the Bhisho High Court,” said Mawisa.

● Alindile Mnyameni from Willowvale was sentenced on Tuesday to 20 years in prison for raping a 23-year-old woman in 2014.

He was sentenced at the Willowvale Magistrate’s Court.

According to police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha, the woman was walking to her boyfriend’s house on August 2 2014, when she came across Mnyameni, who demanded R5 from her.

“When she told him that she did not have it, he forced her to his place. He raped her and later released her,” said Manatha. —
