Countdown to the SuperHero fun run

-

THE Vincent Park Shopping Centre’s SuperHero fun run is taking place this Sunday.

The costumed run is held in association with the Daily Dispatch, GO Express, Jacksons Fabrics, UWP Consulting and Silver Eagle Spur.

The 5km run, which starts at 7.30am, finishes at Vincent Park Shopping Centre.

Centre manager Joseph Parsley said the event was suitable for the whole family, including children in prams and dogs.

“Four-legged superheroes are welcome to join the fun, provided that they are on leashes and stay within the race area,” he said.

Parsley said participants must dress as their favourite superheroes and support this year’s nominated cause, The Daily Dispatch-Johnson & Johnson Local Hero Awards.

“Supporting the Local Hero Awards this year affords us the opportunity to celebrate the everyday heroes in our community.

“As part of the East London community for the past 45 years, this is of particular importance to us.

“Supporting the community in which we operate remains a key focus of our brand,” said Parsley.

The run starts in Chamberlain Road, veers left into Bauhinia Drive, then left again into Vincent Gardens Road. Thereafter the route winds back to Vincent Park via Lancaster Road and along Western Avenue.

The Daily Dispatch-Johnson & Johnson Local Heroes campaign involves a call for the public to submit nominations for their Local Heroes.

A Daily Dispatch journalist then selects the most noteworthy individuals from these nominations, and profiles their stories in the paper.

Nominations closed on August 26 this year. The Daily Dispatch has featured 50 nominees over a sevenmonth period. From the nominees, a judging committee has selected the Top 12 Local Heroes.

The awards culminate in an annual formal event where our Local Heroes are given a platform.

Entry for the SuperHero fun run is just R50 for adults and R20 for kids under the age of 12. The first 500 people with paid entries will each receive a great goodie bag.

The first 200 registered and paid kids will each receive a superhero cape. Runners can register at the mall’s information desk during the mall hours of 9am to 6pm. — DDR
