Dabula brothers’ plan still in pipeline

-

THE Dabula brothers – Siyolo and soapie star Vuyo – have not abandoned their plans to invade the boxing promotion scene.

This was revealed by Siyolo after plans to launch their boxing promotion with a debut tournament fizzled out.

Trading under the banner of Dabula Sports Production, the brothers had planned to organise a tournament in Mpumalanga last month.

However due to the busy schedule of Vuyo, who is known as Gadaffi in popular SABC 1 soapie Generations: The Legacy, such plans were put on hold.

But Siyolo, a former professional boxer, says the debut tournament was now scheduled for next April.

“We have not finalised everything as yet but it has been extremely difficult to secure funding,” he said.

This revelation came as a surprise given the popularity of Vuyo whose association with boxing dates back to characters he has played.

Vuyo was also roped in as one of the celebrity figures to participate in an exhibition boxing match with his counterpart Gabriel Temudzani who plays Chief Azwindini in SABC 2 soapie Muvhango.

The decision, which formed part of the return of national boxing awards in Durban early this year, saw television viewing soaring, rekindling debate that boxing was still capable of reclaiming its spot as one of the popular sporting codes in the land.

Asked how a company co-owned by Vuyo could not secure funding, Siyolo said part of the challenge was the busy schedule of his sibling.

“He has a tight schedule, sometimes we are unable to meet,” he said.

“But we will get around this and finally organise this tournament which will be one of many to come.”

Siyolo has not forsaken his boxing passion having played a crucial advisory role to former world champion Nkosinathi Joyi.

In fact Joyi is expected to uproot to Johannesburg to begin his extensive training programme with Siyolo. — Boxing Mecca
