Eubank steps out of the shadows in style

YET another quiet weekend for boxing but at least there was the start of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) in the light-heavyweigh­t division.

This when Chris Eubank jnr, who is more famous because of being the son of former multiple world champion Chris Eubank, finally stepped into the ring and let his fists do the talking instead of just shooting off his mouth.

The Eubanks are infamous for their public challenge of Gennady Golovkin, only for them to back down when it was time to sign the contract.

They have also withdrawn from a number of high-profile bouts, with their excessive demands putting off promoters.

Now Eubank is part of the WBSS in the super-middleweig­ht, and did he kick off his round in impressive manner when he pole-axed previously unbeaten Turk Avni Yildirim in the third round to install himself as a favourite to win the series.

There was also a SA heavyweigh­t title clash in Bloemfonte­in to form part of the Macufe festivitie­s.

This when Osborne Machimana yet again ascended the throne with a victory over Justice Siliga.

But the fight was of such poor quality that it is debated more elsewhere on these pages about what needs to be done to resurrect the heavy weight division.
