Homeboy to cross his fingers for Idols SA cut
EAST London-born singer Christo Daniels is the Eastern Cape’s only hope in winning the national singing competition Idols SA.
Currently in the top seven, Daniels will find out tomorrow if he has made it to the top six of the competition.
The Eastern Cape, known for producing award-winning musicians, is yet to produce a winner for this popular Mzansi Magic singing competition.
Last year’s winner, Noma Khumalo, was from Pietermaritzburg, making her the fourth Idol from KwaZulu-Natal.
She joined the likes of Khaya Mthethwa, Jason Hartman and Vincent Bones, who all hail from Zululand.
The Western Cape has produced three Idols since the show made its debut in South Africa. The first winner was Heinz Winckler, from Stellenbosch.
The show is in its 13th season and, hopefully, this time the Eastern Cape will bring the title home.
With such a huge responsibility on his vocal chords, Daniels said he was amazed by the support he has been receiving from his home province, especially East London and Port Elizabeth.
“I honestly did not think I would make it this far in the competition. Just before the top 10 was announced I did not have enough votes and I didn’t get this far but people have been campaigning for me,” he said.
Daniels first auditioned for the show in Johannesburg but did not make the preliminary rounds. When a pop-up audition studio came to Port Elizabeth, he went in for a second chance.
“I was very disappointed when I didn’t make it in Johannesburg. I was over the moon when I made it in Port Elizabeth and through to theatre week,” he said, adding that it was the first time he was auditioning for a music competition.
The 21-year-old said it was only natural for him to pursue music as he grew up in a musical family.
“Even though I didn’t study music at school, I grew up singing in church and my family loves music,” he said.
