Thunderbirds chasing winning spark

Apleni said the team was more than ready for this challenge, without taking anything away from City Lads.

“For the past three seasons, we have always won against them in Port Elizabeth – not here at home.”

He was not happy about the 0-0 stalemate his charges played away to East London outfit Birmingham last weekend as it broke their 12-game winning streak since the beginning of the season.

“Because of the strong winds we didn’t want to change our style of play because they are not used to that.

“Because when we tried playing on the ground, the ball ran with the wind and that was the most difficult game we have played so far.

“From that game I learnt that we have to be prepared for any kind of weather because that was our downfall.

“I was not happy they [Birmingham] broke our unbeaten run and today we are going to fight for dear life to get a win so we can close on a high.”

Well-decorated City Lads captain Andisiwe Ndesi said they were going to pull out all the stops for a win.

“We have been working on our mistakes as we are preparing to do battle with our rivals. We have been working on our finishing in the striking department and also focusing on our communication in defence.

“The team looks solid enough for us to steal this one even though they beat us in our last encounter – but we learnt a few things from that game,” Ndesi said.
