Daily Dispatch journo wins top Vodacom Award in EC
DAILY Dispatch senior reporter Bongani Fuzile won the Eastern Cape region’s Vodacom Journalist of the Year award for the best environmental reporting last night.
The awards were presented in Port Elizabeth.
Fuzile won the CSI/Sustainability award for his coverage of water challenges at KwaSophie Farms outside Komani.
The Dispatch’s sister publication, The Herald, walked away with five awards.
Photographer Eugene Coetzee won the best photography category; Michael and Kathryn Kimberley won the sports category; digital reporter Deneesha Pillay got the nod as the best young journalist while Riaan Marais came tops in the features category.
The Herald also won the top award in the print category for their coverage of the Knysna and Nelson Mandela Bay fires.
The six Eastern Cape awards by the Tiso Blackstar Group journalists came after other group colleagues walked away with multiple accolades during the past week in the Standard Bank Sikuvile Awards and in other regions of the Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards.
The Times photographers Alon Skuy and Thuli Dlamini won the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal regional awards respectively in the photography category.
Skuy also won the Sikuvile photographic awards in both news and sports photography categories.
Sowetan’s Frank Maponya and Sandile Ndlovu won a Sikuvile award in the hard news category, while The Herald’s Estelle Ellis won the feature category.
Graeme Hosken, Kyle Cowan, Genevieve Quintal, Mzilikazi wa Afrika, Hannah Ziady, Sabelo Skiti, Sikonathi Mantshantsha and Thanduxolo Jika won the Gauteng regional Vodacom aware in the print news category for their exposé on the Gupta e-mails and state capture.
The Vodacom KZN sustainability category winner was Tiso Blackstar’s consumer reporter Wendy Knowler. — DDC
