A PREVIOUSLY disadvantaged school in Mzamomhle informal settlement hosted its very first awards ceremony for top performing Grade 3 pupils.

Mzamowethu Public School, which has more than 150 pupils in Grade 3, handed out awards to 30 pupils for excellent performance in various subjects, as well as for having shown significant improvement in their work during the year.

Despite the school not having a school hall, teachers, parents and pupils braved the scorching sun on Monday to celebrate the auspicious occasion on the school veranda.

During the event, the guests were entertained with songs and poetry pieces by senior pupils.

After the ceremony, the pupils were treated to a lunch.

Intermediate phase head of department, Thulisa MandlaKildasi, said despite the challenges the school faced, it was important for the school to host the awards, not only to celebrate pupils for excelling academically but also to motivate pupils to work harder as they moved on to the next phase.

Mandla-Kildasi encouraged parents to get involved in their children’s school life by assisting them work.

“This is a huge stride for the pupils as they leap to the new grade and phase.”

Mzamowethu deputy principal Zitha Kiviet congratulated the pupils on graduating to the next phase.

Kiviet encouraged pupils to work hard and to always respect and listen to their elders.

“This is a big day for all of us as teachers, parents and pupils. The first step was graduating in Grade R and today marks another step further.

“We are extremely proud of our pupils and wish them the best for next year,” said Kiviet. with their school
