Music just what the Doctor ordered

NINETIES rhythm and blues group Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels will be bringing their sounds to Mthatha for the first time this weekend.

The event organised by H&K Entertainment headed by Wain Hawkes and Gerard Knock will take place at the OR Tambo Hall in Southernwood.

Dr Victor, whose real name is Victor Khojane, said the group’s sound has evolved over the years but they have stayed true to the South African style.

“We have that afro-pop sound and a little bit of jazz and soul. It’s a whole mixture of genres but it’s exciting,” he said.

For more than 20 years, Khojane has been crafting and creating an uplifting uptempo sound that has earned this singer, musician, songwriter and producer an enviable reputation on the South African and international music scenes.

The group has opened for the likes of Paul Simon, Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson, Midem and various high-profile South African acts including Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Ricardo, Chicco Twala and Lucky Dube, among many others.

“I have been to big cities [in the Eastern Cape] such as Port Elizabeth and East London but it will be the first time in Mthatha. Our band is old and I know we have a following that side and I cannot wait to see them,” he said.

Khojane said he was currently working on his new album due to be released early next year.

“We will be releasing a single during the festive season and that will prepare people for the big release early next year,” he said.

Tickets for the show cost R250 per person and are available through Computicket. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
