Paxton sings her way to Idols crown

-

SEVENTEEN-year-old Paxton Fielies on Sunday night became the sixth woman to win the coveted Idols SA title.

She joins Anke Pietrangeli, Karin Kortje, Jody Williams, Sasha-Lee Davids and Noma Khumalo.

The Western Cape teen was up against KwaZulu-Natal’s Mthokozisi Ndaba in the finale. Fielies walks away with more than R1.1-million in cash, a new car and the ultimate prize – a record deal with Gallo Records.

The season 13 finale was nothing short of a magical extravaganza. From the dramatic set, resplendent in strobe and laser lights, to the black lacquered stage that made the top two look like they were gliding on water, Carnival City’s Big Top Arena was the perfect setting for the finale.

After months of battling it out in a bruising contest, Fielies and Ndaba showed the country just why they were the last two standing.

Before the nail-biting announcement of the season 13 winner, Idols SA put on a dazzling showcase of homegrown talent that saw the stage feature one formidable act after the other.

This season’s top 10 opened a twohour display of showmanship with a high-octane performance of Four Five Seconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney.

The pageantry continued with special medleys and mixes featuring D J Tira and Destruction Boys, Tipcee, Naak Musiq, Madness, last year’s winner Noma, judge Somizi and Heavy K, Kwesta, TLT, ChianoSky, and KidX.

Season 13 vocal coach Donald also took to the stage to perform Landela, featuring the top 10.

There was a touch of nostalgia courtesy of Boom Shaka and TKZee, who performed a medley of their kwaito hits that had the full-capacity audience on their feet.

Accompanied by the multi-awardwinning Soweto Gospel Choir, Fielies performed Stand Up for Love by Destiny’s Child and Ndaba sang R Kelly’s The Storm Is Over.

Fielies is expected to start recording her debut album.

Auditions for season 14 kick off in January. — DDR
