The lighter side of Lolo Vandal
RAPPER Lolo Vandal is taking his fans back to the 1990s with his latest extended play, Bonus.
The Eastern Cape muso, 24, now based in Johannesburg, has been featured in SA’s biggest hip-hop magazine, Hype, and his music is played on top stations.
Lolo Vandal, real name Zuxole Ngetu, released his second album early this year and now he has given his fans something else to enjoy over the festive season. Ngetu who started his rap journey at the age of 14, told the Daily Dispatch this week that Bonus was a showcase for his fun side. “This time of year people receive their bonuses, hence the title Bonus. It’s a little something to get people dancing.
“The EP is not as deep as my previous work – it’s fun and easy to jam to,” he said, adding his sound had taken a different direction lately. On the EP, he has sampled Kelly Rowland and Nelly’s Dilemma song. “The sound is different – it’s on that 1990s tip, so there is an element of kwaito,” he said.
Ngetu said there had been a spurt of growth since the second album.
“I started working with Sthembiso Twala, who is the sound engineer of The Soil,” he said, adding he had appeared on SABC2’s Morning Live as well as the online programme SABC Trends.
Ngetu has started his own record label, African Elephant, and hopes to sign other Eastern Cape artists.
“There are many talented artists who do not have resources to take their music out there.
“I hope this record label serves as that.” —
