Cape Town City cuts ties with top marksman Majoro

-

CAPE Town City have released striker Lehlohonolo Majoro six months before his contract was due to expire.

The former AmaZulu, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates marksman spent a season-and-a-half with the Cape side and netted 11 goals in 41 matches, helping the club win the 2016 Telkom Knockout competition.

But although he has featured in 10 matches in the current campaign, Majoro has fallen out of favour and did not play in City’s final few matches of the year.

“As one of the founding members Majoro will always have a special place at this club,” read a club statement. “He loved it like a family and over his time here he defined what it means to be a Cape Town City player.

“Majoro was in the last few months of his contract so rather than hold him until May, we decided to support him to find a new club where he can extend his career a few more years and get more game time.”

The 31-year-old will now be free to join a club of his choice.

Meanwhile Cape Town City midfielder Teko Modise believes there is more to come from the Absa Premiership title challengers when the league resumes in 2018.

At the mid-season break the Blue and Gold Army are currently in second place, four points adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

This was achieved with consecutive 1-0 victories in the final two fixtures against AmaZulu and the Brazilians respectively – which ended a four-game winless run.

And Modise feels if they can maintain that sort of performance level in the new year like they did at the start of the 2017/18 season, the Cape Townbased side are within a chance of domestic glory.

“It’s been a roller-coaster season. We are still a young team with a lot of potential as well,” he told reporters. “We are still in the mix of things. We hope to continue to grow and get results.” — SuperSport.com
