AN EASTERN Cape woman has been charged with double murder and arson after a man in his late 40s and his female friend were killed in Mdantsane this week.

The incident happened on Wednesday night in the township’s NU14.

According to Mdantsane police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi, the deceased man’s estranged wife arrived at his house with two men. The husband was shot dead and a female friend doused with petrol before being set alight.

“In the process, the house also caught fire and the people then fled the scene,” said Mbi.

According to Mbi the woman survived and was rushed to hospital. However, she later succumbed to her injuries.

The police were called and on investigation, a woman was arrested while her two alleged accomplices are still at large.

The woman who was arrested is expected to appear in Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday next week.

Meanwhile, Butterworth police arrested a 21-year-old man for the alleged rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl.

Butterworth police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the alleged rape took place on Wednesday at around 10pm at Cerhu Village.

“It is believed that the suspect strangled the victim after raping her as she had no visible injuries. The body of the deceased was found by a passerby near Cerhu river on Thursday at about 2pm. A police investigation led to the arrest of the suspect,” said Manatha.

The suspect has been charged with rape and murder and will appear before the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday,” he said.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of her death to all her relatives.

Acting Eastern Cape police commissioner Major General André Swarts condemned the rape and murder of the 15-year-old. He congratulated Butterworth police for their swift actions in apprehending the suspect. — bonganif@dispatch.
