ANC event expected to be economic boost for EL

- By ZOLILE MENZELWA

BUSINESS formations have lauded East London’s hosting of the ANC January 8 statement celebrations next week as an opportune time to make good money.

The ANC is expecting 100 000 people to attend the event, with KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Free State having committed to bus in 10 000 each.

The provincial convener of the Black Business Forum, Luthando Bara, said business in the area had waited for a long time for an event of this magnitude.

“The Eastern Cape does not have mines so tourism and manufacturing are the backbone of our economy.

“This event is momentous for business in general and black business must research it so that they can maximise their benefits.”

ANC provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi earlier told the Dispatch that the Buffalo City, Jan Smuts and Buffalo Park stadiums would be used for the event on January 13.

Progressive Youth in Business (PYB) provincial chairwoman Buhle Tonise said businesses catering for travellers and event-goers would cash in from the event.

“For us as young entrepreneurs, it is also an opportunity to show the rest of the country that we can deliver a world-class service to all the different people who will be descending on the province.”

Border-Kei Chamber of Business director Les Holbrook said catering and accommodation would do well. He said the level of spending was going to be high.

The celebrations are expected to set the tone for the ruling party and government for the year. ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa will be the main speaker. The statement is followed by the State of the Nation address in February. —
