Spear sharpen their skills in bid to overcome league log-leaders Tornado

- By MFUNDO PILISO

SPEAR aim to topple ABC Motsepe League log-leaders Tornado when the sides clash at the Mqeshwa Sports Field in Bizana on Saturday.

After changing their name at the beginning of the season and having a facelift, Spear have been working hard to reclaim their strength.

Last season, two of their experienced and influential players, centrebacks Monelisi Mkhize and Decor Tshaka, left the club.

But the Bizana-based outfit have since managed to keep up in the fastpaced league, and are in fourth place in the log standings, with 21 points.

Coach Bonisile Mtelo reckons they have a good chance of stealing the much-needed three points from the dominant visitors.

Mtelo, who has been at the helm of Spear for the past two seasons, said he wanted to make sure that young charges solidified their in the top-five in the log.

Spear will have to dig deep to frustrate Mdantsane-based Tornado, who have managed to stay on top in the third-tier league, losing only one game, against old foes EC Bees. Tornado his position have won 10 matches and have 31 points.

“We are facing a very experienced and determined Tornado, who’ve made their intentions very clear, so we are wary of their abilities. But we also have a job to do and we won’t go down quietly,”said Mtelo. “We have a few challenges that we are still working on – we just need to reinforce a few loose ends, then we can say we are all set.”

Mtelo said he needed to work on his defence as the young players he recently signed needed more time to adjust to the league.
