Warriors Cubs aim for top spot

- By ROSS ROCHE

THE Warriors Cubs team will be gunning to get their Cubs week off to the best possible start when they take on the Cobras Cubs in Stellenbosch today.

The team, featuring the top players from the Border and Eastern Province U19 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week teams, as well as a sprinkling of U17 players, will be eager to impress at the annual junior franchise side showpiece.

“I think we have a very good mix of players from EP and Border who both did well at the Coke Week,” Warriors Cubs coach Andre de Beer said.

“The guys are keen for the first match. They are relaxed and know what to do so they just have to go out there and enjoy themselves.

“The Cobras side is made up of a number of Boland players who did well at the Coke Week and a few Western Province players, so they will be a challenge. But if everyone plays at their full potential we can do very well over the next few days.”

The Cubs Week will see the Warriors face off against each of the other five franchise sides, namely the Lions, Titans, Knights, Dolphins and Cobras, with the team finishing top of the log at the end crowned as champions.

“It is going to be very tough to finish on top with all the teams being franchise sides and bonus points will be very critical, so the team that finishes on top will be the deserved winners and we hope to be around there,”said De Beer,

With Border and EP having done well at the Coke Week, Border making the final match and EP only losing once, the players will look to take that top form into the Cubs Week.

“They want to use this chance to showcase their talents, especially with a number of these players heading to university,” De Beer added.
