THREE people were killed and 14 injured in two separate car accidents on the Eastern Cape roads as large volumes of traffic moved to and from the ANC’s 106th birthday celebrations in East London over the weekend.

In one of the incidents two people were killed and 13 were rushed to hospital on Saturday morning when a minibus taxi believed to have been ferrying ANC supporters collided head-on with a Chevrolet Spark.

Eastern Cape traffic deputy director Charles Bramwell said the Toyota Quantum minibus was travelling from Port Elizabeth to King William’s Town while the Spark was making its way to Grahamstown.

Bramwell said the driver of the Spark, a woman, and her male passenger were killed instantly at the scene at 9.45am. “The driver of the Quantum sustained minor injuries and was treated and left at the scene as he didn’t want to leave the Quantum behind.”

Bramwell said 12 injured passengers had been taken to Nompumelelo Hospital in Peddie while one passenger was taken to Settler’s hospital in Grahamstown. Bramwell said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated by the police.

In a second accident, a sedan driver died in a head-on collision between a 30-ton horse and trailer truck and a Nissan i.20 sedan yesterday at 6.30am on the R72 near Kidds Beach.

The truck driver was injured. Bramwell said it is alleged that the Hyundai, which was driving to Port Elizabeth, was overtaking when it crashed into the front right of the truck.

“The male truck driver sustained moderate injuries while the driver of the Hyundai i20 was fatally injured.” —
