Chippa held at home

- By YONELA MOFU

CHIPPA United failed to collect maximum points at home when they played to a goalless draw with Lamontville Golden Arrows in their Absa Premiership match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium yesterday.

This was the Chilli Boy’s second share of spoils after playing to a stalemate with Bidvest Wits in their previous game.

Chippa coach Teboho Moloi said before the game the team had banished the word loss from their vocabulary.

The first half was presented with plenty of goal scoring opportunities coming from the Chilli Boys’ half of the field as it was a one-sided affair in the opening stages of the game.

Moloi’s charges dominated the midfield battle and controlled the pace of the game well with Thabo Rakhale, Kurt Lentjies and Mxolisi Machuphu combining well.

Abel Mabaso received a stunning cross from Lentjies but failed to convert the goal as he mistimed his header. Lenjties was later handed a chance to score but his shot went straight to goalkeeper Nkosindiphile Gumede.

Selfish play by Chilli Boys’ striker Machuphu saw them lose out on a glorious opportunity to get onto the scoreboard when instead of being a team player, he saw the headlines and went for glory – only for his shot to go wide. A moment of individual brilliance by midfielder Linda Mntambo saw them receive a free-kick just outside the box but the spot kick sailed over the bar.

Arrows almost broke the deadlock but Danny Venter was denied by the right post with goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi beaten.

Chippa central defender James Okwuosa gifted Abafana Bes’thende a good chance when he failed to clear his lines, but striker Mutizwa Knox failed to make Akpeyi work.

Chippa pushed hard in the last 10 minutes of the game but were unable to snatch maximum points.
