Auditing ahead of conference

THE ANC Youth League in the Eastern Cape will have its elective conference in March but before this it will have to finalise the auditing of members in all eight of its regions.

This was said by league provincial task team (PTT) convener Mlondi Mkhize during an interview with the Daily Dispatch yesterday.

Mkhize said the ANCYL had a three-month programme focused on delivering the elective provincial congress.

He said O R Tambo had requested to be audited.

“Our understanding is that the team that does the auditing will be sent this week or next week to audit the regions and subsequently the regions [will have their] congresses. Other regions are in the final stage of consolidating their membership and are also requesting auditing,” he explained.

The Dispatch reported last October that the league planned to go to conference before the mother body’s elective conference in December. League president Collen Maine was quoted as saying the young lions would go to conference “come what may”. This was despite former secretary general and now national chairman Gwede Mantashe’s ban on regional and provincial conferences post September 30.

Mkhize said the 2017 conference never happened because the Eastern Cape was busy preparing for the mother body’s provincial congress.

“The ANC had issued a communique saying that, except for structures that are overdue, there must be no congresses. It became impractical for us to conduct BGMs to prepare for congress,” he said.“…in many structures of the ANC in the Eastern Cape you will find leaders of the ANC being leaders of the youth league.”

He said a decision was taken to allow the ANC in the province to have its elective conference and then the ANCYL would hold its conference soon after that.

He said when the ANCYL intended to hold its conference, it was around November and preparations for the national conference were in progress. —
