Border star in Jozi to chase her dream

Zethu will still be returning to chase local provincial title

BORDER’S top amateur woman golfer, Zethu Myeki, is aiming for much bigger things after making the move to Johannesburg to help further her career.

Myeki, who has been the number three ranked amateur in South Africa over the past two years, is now playing out of Rand Park Golf Club as she looks to scale new heights.

“I felt coming to J’oburg would open more doors for me golf wise, as well as finishing my studies, which is something that is very important for me to get done,” said Myeki.

“I feel like there is more opportunities here than in East London and I am looking forward to a new challenge.”

She is being coached by top SA women’s golf coach Costanza Trussoni and has been enjoying the experience of playing up in Johannesburg so far.

“I know her (Trussoni) from the women’s golf South Africa elite squad which I am a part of. She coaches there as well, so I decided to come and learn from her because I connect well with her and she helped me a lot when I went to the camps in the past,” said Myeki.

“The experience has been great so far. I am a member of Rand Park obviously and they have two courses here which I have got to play on, and the environment has just been very nice to be a part of.”

On the playing front Myeki is currently in fantastic form.

In December she did superbly at the Pinkstig Finale in Sun City, claiming a third place finish in a field that included professionals and amateurs, and she has taken that form into the new year, triumphing at the Eastern Province championships held in Port Elizabeth last week.

“It was a great experience for me at the Pinkstig because I was playing against professionals. So for me to finish third overall was amazing. I went there not expecting anything. I went to play my game and have fun and I ended up third, which was fantastic.

“I was so excited to finally get the win at the EP champs.

“The last two years I finished runner-up, in 2016 I lost by one shot to Azelia (Meichtry) and last year Kaleigh (Telfer) beat me in a play-off, so it was incredible to finally clinch the title.”

Looking ahead, Myeki will now be returning to East London for the Border Ladies Golf championship taking place next weekend.

She is a former champion, having won the title in 2015, before taking third in 2016 and the runner-up spot last year, so she will be looking to use her home knowledge to try and claim another title.

“I am very excited to come back. Border will always be my home, no matter where I am, and I am looking forward to playing in the Border champs,” said Myeki.

“I am just going to have fun, stick to my game plan and see what happens. I am just going to make sure I have fun on the golf course.”

Border ladies golf admitted they were sad to lose Myeki but are excited to watch her progress going forward.

“We are very sorry to lose Zethu but it is absolutely the best thing she could do right now,” said Border Ladies Golf president, Wendy May.

“We wish her every success in her endeavour to reach the pinnacle of her golfing career.

“She has the world at her feet with her personality, determination and attitude. Go, Zethu, go!”
