DA wants MEC to take action against PSJ mayor
A DEMOCRATIC Alliance PR councillor in Port St Johns wants cooperative governance and traditional affairs (Cogta) MEC Fikile Xasa to hold mayor Lindelwa Rolobile to account for plunging the municipality into chaos.
Angry hawkers, fed up with piles of uncollected garbage rotting on the streets, last week gathered it up and dumped it in front of the municipal buildings.
The opposition councillor, Derrick Madini, accused Rolobile of being at the centre of the chaos by promising municipal workers wage increases.
He claimed some municipal workers took part in the dumping, although Samwu provincial deputy chairman Lebo Mangxa denied this.
“Mayor Rolobile must carry some of the responsibility after making false commitments to them [workers],” Madini said.
“We urge the MEC to personally visit Port St Johns local municipality and see for himself the conditions residents have to endure. The DA needs assurance from the MEC that the mayor will be held accountable for not implementing a decision she approved.”
Attempts to get hold of Rolobile were unsuccessful yesterday as her phone went unanswered.
The Dispatch previously reported that Rolobile was among several mayors scheduled to be recalled by the ANC provincial executive committee (PEC).
Cogta spokesman Mamnkeli Ngam yesterday said the DA should formally write a letter to the MEC detailing their request. —
