Last chance saloon for Cup

- By VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

KAIZER Chiefs centre-back Erick Mathoho said the Nedbank Cup could be their only chance to get their hands on silverware this season.

In this case their much anticipated Nedbank Cup quarterfinal fixture against Baroka FC is a must-win.

Amakhosi host the Limpopo side in what is expected to be a heated affair, at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium tomorrow (8.15pm).

The last time Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup was in 2013 when Stuart Baxter was still in charge. It was at this stage where Chiefs exited the competition last year after being knockout by SuperSport United.

The Soweto giants will be banking on their Port Elizabeth fans to cheer them on to the next stage of the competition.

Mathoho says Chiefs have gone without silverware for too long and aim to end their drought by winning the cup competition.

But, first they would have to pass a tricky Baroka side who will go all out as they will want to prove a point.

“This is a very important game for us, because we have not won any silverware in a very long time. It’s almost three years now and I think this season we are only left with the Nedbank Cup.

“We will go all out so that we advance to the next stage,” said Mathoho.

“When we prepare for games we don’t look at the team’s performance or on their status. Our focus is on winning regardless of the club’s name.

“We have prepared very well and hopefully we will come out with good results.”

The 28-year-old said pressure was part of the game.

“As a soccer player you always want to win something, especially if you are playing for a big team like Kaizer Chiefs.

“You must make sure that the supporters , actually the whole family is happy. We can’t just say we are not under pressure, we are under huge pressure,” he said.
