Cheyne the man to follow

- Dispatch Racing Editor

STICKING with jockey Greg Cheyne could be profitable for punters tomorrow at Fairview, where he has a promising book of rides.

His first mount is aboard the Alan Greeff-trained Watsonia in Race 2, a Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1 200m.

Although it seems to be a three-horse race, Watsonia has one win to her credit from three starts and looks a strong contender for top honours alongside Klever Kathy and Tasunke.

Race 3 is an open event with Star Burst Galaxy looking to be the one to beat after two consecutive and convincing wins, but Cheyne on Our Destiny seems to be a big danger. The five-year-old daughter of Var was impressive last time out when winning by 2,75 lengths.

However, Easy Street, Clifton Sunset and Favour’s Pride will also have their supporters.

In Race 5, the Fairview Flying Five over 1 000m with prize money of R110 000, Cheyne looks to be a clear-cut winner on the ultra-consistent Juan Two Three, who has come very close in his last two starts.

The Alan Greeff-trained son of Var is an eight-time winner from 17 starts and seems to be an exotic banker on the day. However, the likes of Phelan Lucky and Starflash won’t make it easy for owners CG & LF Scribante to collect the winner’s cheque.

Cheyne can also win Race 6 with Kimberley Star, although Sabbatical, with Grant van Niekerk up, looms as a big danger. Kimberley Star finished just 0,15 lengths behind Sabbatical last time over 1 600m and can set the record straight this time over 2 000m.

Sabbatical, from the Justin Snaith yard, is eyeing a third consecutive victory.

Race 7 is the main event of the day, the East Cape Oaks over 2 000m with prize money of R150 000. Here Cheyne has another winning chance with Queen Forever, who has been priced up favourite at 12-10.

Queen Forever is a three-time winner from seven outings and came very close in her last two starts. If she can keep the frontrunners in sight, Cheyne could make her a massive runner in the closing stages.

Those most likely to follow her home in this Listed race are Widow’s Lamp, Esteemal and Woodstock Fairy.

In the last race, Cheyne rides Arabian Dynasty. He faces strong competition but should finish in the money.

Race 1, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1 000m, gets under way at 12:40 with Seattle Lily the likely winner. Lyle Hewitson takes the ride.
