Call to stop tender fraud
One tractor bought for ‘price of 10’
CHIEF Buyanda Gwazinamba Matanzima called on government to halt tender fraud as it was impacting on service delivery.
Matanzima was speaking at the handover of lucerne equipment to the Qamata irrigation scheme in Qamata near Cofimvaba yesterday.
“Certain service providers are milking the municipality but doing nothing to improve the lives of our communities.
“They are not giving back to the community. We want the government to help us stop this,” he said.
Matanzima said when using the tender system, one tractor was bought at the price of 10, and this was “milking” the municipality.
“Government is working hard to improve the lives of our people but the tender system is pulling it down,” he said.
Matanzima said the Chris Hani District Municipality was a rural district, yet there was only one agricultural school in the district.
“Our government must help us in making our education relevant to the economy of this district,” Matanzima said.
He said there were cooperatives in the district but most of them were on paper.
“Now government has reached the stage of needing to make these cooperatives work,” he said.
He called on government for help in looking for investors and partnerships for these cooperatives.
Chris Hani District Municipality executive mayor Kholiswa Vimbayo said: “We have dedicated this day for farmers. Today 10 tractors will be given to cooperatives from around the district from the department of rural development. We are also handing over a mower disc type and a hay rake.”
She said the district was lucky to have had leaders such as Chris Hani.
“We have a responsibility of remembering these leaders and what they stood for. We must ensure we live our lives to celebrate theirs,” she said. —
