EISTEDDFOD season is upon us!

The East London Port Rex Lions club became involved in the Eisteddfod in the mid-1980s and has remained the primary sponsor of the event ever since.

The overall organiser of the event, Grassey Buitendag, a passionate musician and former Cambridge High School principal, says it is all systems go for the year’s biggest school music event, which will run from Monday May 7 through to Friday May 18.

“Pupils and teachers spend months preparing for the Eisteddfod and we are eager to see the talent that is out there,” said Buitendag.

Support from the Eisteddfod’s primary sponsor has been tremendous and does not go unnoticed, he added.

“The Port Rex Lions Club representative Chow Bissell, together with his wife Yvonne, have remained anchors of the Eisteddfod in support and liaison between the eisteddfod committee and the Port Rex Lions Club,” said Buitendag.

Schools’ programmes must include music from earlier periods.

In 2015, a contemporary section was added to the syllabus to cater for pupils offering more modern instruments.

The vocal and choral section will take place from May 7 to 10 at the Cambridge High School hall.

The contemporary section will take place on May 10 and 11 at the Selborne College school hall.

The non-piano instrumental section is from May 14 to 18 at Selborne College.

The pianoforte section will take place from May 14 to 17 at Clarendon Primary School.

Tickets are on sale at all event venues for R25. —
