Turning heads: five hair trends hot off the runway

- By NOKUBONGA THUSI

FROM crimping to braiding, these are the catwalk hair trends that industry experts think you should try

1. ‘80S- AND ‘90S-INSPIRED HAIR

“I am excited to see an element of fun, sexiness and sophistication making its debut in the hair trends for Autumn/Winter ‘18,” says Andrew Young, education manager at ghd South Africa.

“Inspired by the ‘80s and ‘90s, cropped chopped cuts with wind-swept fringes and natural texture are being celebrated again with even more pumped-up volume. The big, bouncy blowouts that were once so “uncool” return triumphant (see below).

“The poker-straight wet look has a fresh injection of volume and texture, making it softer and less harsh.

“For a more glam and understated sense of sophistication, the low smooth and sleek ponytails from the ‘90s are always a winner.” Beauty buys that’ll help you get the look:

•Design Essentials Almond Avocado Curl Enhancing Mousse, R240*

•Toni and Guy Sea Salt Texturising Spray, 200ml, R150*

2. BLUNT CUTS

Hair has taken inspiration from the ’60s for effortlessly cool blunt cuts that even the Beatles would be proud of.

“The cuts are structured but worn in a restructured way,” says Christilene ErasmusBush, Carlton Hair creative team head. Beauty buys that’ll help you get the look:

•Davines OI Oil Absolute Beautifying Potion, 50ml, R275

•Moroccan Oil Texture Clay, 75ml, R420

3. CRIMPING MAKES A COMEBACK “Contouring, a technique that helps define and enhance facial features in subtle ways, has been a makeup buzzword for a while,” says Young. “The trend is moving towards hair and you can now use the crimping technique that adds hidden volume around the head to enhance face shapes.” Beauty buys that’ll help you get the look:

•ghd Contour Professional Crimper, R1 999

•ghd Final Shine Spray, 100ml, R220

4. BRAIDS AND MORE BRAIDS “There was a flicker of braiding seen at almost every show this season, whether in the form of a sleek, athletic ponytail or an accessory-like side braid,” says Young.

“The braid remains a fashion element, and incorporating a fish tail or a Dutch braid into your everyday look is a must.”

Beauty buys that’ll help you get the look:

•L’Oreal Studio Line Invisi’hold 24h Natural Clear Gel Normal Strength 6, 150ml, R59

•Perfect Touch Freezing Gel Xtreme Hold, 250ml, R47

5. DUAL-TEXTURED HAIR

“It’s a style that oozes an effortlessly cool vibe, with clean centre partings, gentle waves and hair pulled back from the face, reflecting an easy yet elegant aesthetic,” says Erasmus-Bush. How to achieve it?

“After blowing the hair out, add a slight bend by curling large sections and pulling down on each curl as soon as it’s released from the iron to stretch it out,” says Erasmus-Bush.

Beauty buys to help get the look:

•ghd Gold Styler, R2 550

•Moroccan Oil Texture Beach Wave Mousse, 175ml, R420
