Selborne leaders of the pack as rivals fail to make much impact

- By ROSS ROCHE

SELBORNE College rugby continues to lead the way for Border schools this season after an impressive weekend at the Grey High Festival in Port Elizabeth that ended on Monday afternoon.

Selborne emerged with two impressive wins to take their winning streak to four and sets them up well ahead of a tricky coming three weeks.

At the festival Selborne claimed solid victories over top Johannesburg opposition, King Edward VII School (KES) and Jeppe.

Taking on KES on Saturday’s opening day Selborne started well but were contained by the KES defence to lead 14-3 at the break, before adding two more tries and a penalty in the second half to run out 29-3 winners.

It was a similar affair in the second game against Jeppe where they dominated again, but were contained to an extent as they managed a comfortable 19-3 win.

Selborne will now look to take that momentum into their home encounter against College rivals Dale this coming weekend and with a very difficult following two matches away against Grey College in Bloemfontein and St Andrews College in Grahamstown, Selborne will want to head into those games with plenty of confidence.

Queen’s College managed to bounce back from their recent drubbing by Selborne by claiming a good 21-17 win over St Stithians College in their only game of the Grey Festival.

They will hope that the confidence boost will give them a lift as they welcome Grey High to Queenstown this weekend for a tough home encounter.

Hudson Park will be looking to bounce back after a mixed Grey Festival.

They started with a bang on Saturday, powering to a 39-24 win against Louis Botha, but were then rocked on Monday just going down 31-24 to Parktown.

Hudson will now look to get back on the winning track when they take on Kingswood College away in Grahamstown. For Dale they will head into their match against Selborne with confidence after finishing their Grey Festival well. In their opening game on Saturday they agonisingly went down 12-10 against Jeppe, but responded well from that disappointment by thumping Daniel Pienaar 32-5 on Monday's final day.

Stirling High will have the weekend off to reflect and plan for the derby against Cambridge next weekend after losing at the Grey Fest – to Brandwag 14-0 and Nico Malan 41-32.
