SOUTH African Music Awardsnominated soul/jazz artist Dumza Maswana will record his first live DVD next month at the Guild Theatre.

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, the Peddieborn musician said it had always been his dream to record his first live DVD back home.

The live recording will feature music from his two previous albums, Iphupha Lam and his Sama- and Mzansi Jazz Awardsnominated album Molo.

He will be accompanied by a 10-piece band.

“Last year, when Msaki and I did a show at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg, I was given the opportunity to record a live DVD there but I refused.

“I have always wanted my first DVD to be recorded in the Eastern Cape, maybe even my second will be recorded here,” he said, adding that Eastern Cape people would relate to his music.

“I tell stories through my music and they are mostly about the Eastern Cape,” he said.

“It is about the things that happen here and I know the people will be more receptive to those stories and the energy will be amazing for a DVD.”

Maswana has shared the stage with some of the country’s top artists including Thandiswa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, Ringo Madlingozi, Sphokazi, the Jaziel Brothers, Mafikizolo and the legendary Tsepo Tshola and Victor Ntoni.

He had the rare opportunity to open for the internationally acclaimed duo Kenny Lattimore and Chanté Moore on their visit to South Africa. Maswana said the recording was also about showcasing Eastern Cape talent.

“It’s important that people know we have facilities for such events back home. We have reputable companies that can record and make a show and there are awesome engineers.

“We have it all and the Guild Theatre is an amazing place, the sound is great and it’s nicely contained. Even though it hosts more than 400 people, it still feels intimate.

“Unfortunately Peddie doesn’t have the right facility for a live recording,” he said.

Maswana said he was confident his fans would support his show.

Tickets for Maswana’s live recording range between R200 to R350 and are available at Computicket or at the Guild Theatre.
