Expect stellar comedy from pair
COMEDIANS Schalk Bezuidenhout and Loyiso Madinga are bringing their joint comedy show, Broken English to Hemingways in East London this month.
Known for their quirky dancing skills, questionable singing, bad acting and fire-breathing, Bezuidenhout and Madinga have become household names among comedy lovers, with sold-out runs of their show. Bezuidenhout’s one-man show, Second Language, and Madinga’s show, Born Free-ish both saw the two travelling all over the country.
Both have opened for acclaimed comedian Trevor Noah and have made appearances at the monthly East London Comedy Night show.
Broken English does not simply point out bad pronunciation and communication skills, but also grammatical errors, presented as top-class comedy.
The award-winning actor Bezuidenhout said he was excited about returning to the Eastern Cape for the show.
“The show made its debut at the National Arts Festival last year and it was well received. A lot of my followers didn’t know Loyiso and the same goes for me and we got the opportunity to grow our fan base,” he said.
The University of Cape Town graduate started comedy in 2011 and since then has taken drama professionally, which saw him win his first South African Film and Television Award for best supporting actor in a TV comedy.
The Afrikaans comic said the journey had not been easy.
“At first, my parents weren’t really happy with the decision that I took to do comedy but now they are fine and celebrate my achievements,” he said.
Bezuidenhout said he and Madinga would be returning again to the National Arts Festival next month.
“This comedy thing is simple, people should expect to laugh and have a good time,” he said.
Hemingways Casino marketing manager Neville Austin said: “This is set to be a stellar performance, and we urge fans to get their tickets to a fun-filled night of laughter with friends and family. If Trevor Noah thinks they are funny, who are we to argue.”
Tickets for the May 26 event cost R160 and are available at Computicket. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. —
