AFTER taking the “do no harm” oath, doctors also promise to share knowledge – and East London doctor Luvuyo Bayeni is doing just that on radio.

Bayeni is the clinical manager for surgery at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane but makes time in his busy schedule for what he calls his “social responsibility”.

He is now a regular feature on Keith Ngesi Radio’s show The Jump Off in a segment called Medical Mondays.

In the segment, Bayeni tackles a variety of medical topics.

Since May is Africa Month, yesterday’s programme dealt with diseases that are prevalent in the African continent.

“In some parts of the African continent diseases are spread through overcrowding and poor sanitation facilities and practices. With other diseases, preventative measures are not available in some areas because of poverty,” Bayeni said on air in a discussion about diseases such as malaria and cholera with host Johanna Makalima.

He told the Daily Dispatch he was doing his bit to help.

“I am doing this in my personal capacity. For me this is about communication and education.

“My understanding is that you never know who is listening and how much of an impact the information will make to them.”

Online radio station boss Keith Ngesi said he was pleased with Bayeni’s involvement. “We are happy to have Dr Bayeni on The

Jump Off show, where he makes a valuable contribution on Medical Mondays.

“We are a content-driven station and embrace professionals like Dr Bayeni, who do this service without looking for gain,” Ngesi said. —
