AWARD-winning blues/rock guitarist Albert Frost kicks off his African Frost Tour in East London this week.

The musician, who has captivated audiences across the country, will be setting the stage alight at Legends Showcase Venue on Thursday night.

“It’s time for me to expand and Africa is opening up to artists like myself, especially coming from a blues background which encapsulates a world music feel,” he said, adding that he would be touring SA, eSwatini, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.

East London is the only Eastern Cape city included in his African Frost Tour.

Frost started making music and releasing mixes in the 1990s but it was only in 2002 that he released his debut album titled, Catfish.

The album was followed by his 2009 release, Devils and Gods.

He has recorded with Arno Carstens, Koos Kombuis, Chris Chameleon, Anton Goosen, David Kramer, Karen Zoid, Blues Broers and many others.

He has performed with most major artists in South Africa, as well as international artists like Ali Farka Touré and Finley Quaye.

He has toured with Simple Minds and REM, and supported the Rolling Stones. Frost has also performed at some legendary and exclusive international music festivals including Isle of Wight, Hard Rock Calling and OppiKoppi.

His latest work, The Wake Up, was released in 2016 and saw him winning the best rock album category at the South African Music Awards.

According to Frost, the album signals the “start of a new journey” for him. In a departure from Frost’s blues roots, The Wake Up explores various musical avenues and lyrical content to create something he says will surprise and excite his fans.

The album won the coveted best rock album category at the 2017 SA Music Awards.

Frost said he will be performing music from The Wake Up and a bit of his previous work.

“I have been working on new material but it won’t be included in this tour. The focus is now on the most recent album and also I will be doing some old stuff,” he said.

Frost will also be performing at the National Arts Festival after his African Frost Tour.

“I love performing in Grahamstown and I am looking forward to doing the Albert Frost Trio show.”

Tickets for the show cost R120, and are available at Lee Gold Music. The show starts at 7pm.

“People can expect a diverse mixture of styles delivered with acoustic and electric guitars, something you will feel because it’s real and uncompromised,” he said. —
