Laugh out loud with Rasdien at Wiseguys

- By POLISWA SEJOSING poliswap@dispatch.co.za

YOU’VE seen him on your TV screens and tomorrow Joey Rasdien is headlining East London comedy night at Wiseguys Bar and Grill.

The event, celebrating its first year anniversary, is a partnership between entertainment company Splakavellis and Wiseguys Bar and Grill.

Since it started, they’ve expanded to Komani, where they will be hosting a show this Thursday.

Rasdien has been in the industry for more than a decade and has featured on a number of shows such as Last Laugh at The Lyric and The

Pure Monate Show on SABC 1. Many will also remember him for his roles in movies

such as Running Riot, Bunny Chow, Vaatjie Sien Sy Gat, Dollars and White Pipes,

Outrageous Blitz Patrollie and Material with Riaad Moosa. Rasdien said he was looking forward to coming to the city.

“I’ve been to East London before. I know Selborne College because we used to play cricket there.” Rasdien said.

“Actually I have been to East London to play cricket more than [I have] to do comedy,” he mused.

“I have been to Buffalo Flats too because you know . . . I have to go see the coloured areas in South Africa.

“I’ve always have a good time [when I’m there].

“I just did a sold-out show in Cape Town at the beginning of the month and we were shooting a movie but that production stopped. Finance, you know. Hopefully we will shoot a follow-up of a movie we did a couple of years ago at the end of this year.”

Rasdien has been doing comedy full-time for 14 years and said one of the biggest lessons he has learned was that sometimes it’s not how funny you are but how popular you are.

“With social media these days, people confuse popularity with genuinely funny.

“It’s the evolution of all things I guess,” he said, urging upcoming comics to just be funny and be themselves.

“Speak in your home language as much as possible and tell your own stories,” he said, adding that the East London audience could expect cognitive dissonance.

On the night Rasdien will be joined by comedians Alfred Adriaan – who will be the host – as well as Chris Forrest, Zimvo and Soso Sigcau.

Tickets cost R120 and are available through quicket.co.za, or WhatsApp 072-107-0554 to book for either show. —
