Sinyabi stalls tournament

- By MESULI ZIFO

THE highly-anticipated promotional debut of Mdantsane’s popular former boxer Macbute Sinyabi this weekend has been shelved after he postponed his planned tournament to July.

Sinyabi, arguably the most eloquent boxer during his fighting days, was set to enter the boxing promotion scene with a SA flyweight title clash between Thembelani Nxoshe and Nhlanhla Ngamntwini on Sunday.

The fight was to be the rematch of their bout in December last year, when Ngamntwini escaped with a points victory in a clash that was downgraded as the national title.

Sinyabi was to launch his MMT Promotions with a number of potentially thrilling bouts including the professional debut of amateur stars Asanda Gingqi and Siyakholwa Khuse.

But he revealed that he had encountered a series of challenges which forced him to move the tournament to July 1 at Orient Theatre.

“What I have realised is calling yourself a promoter and actually organising tournaments are two different things,” he said.

Refusing to divulge the reasons for his decision to postpone the tournament, Sinyabi said the clash between Nxoshe and Ngamntwini would no longer headline his show.

The bout will now be organised by Xaba Promotions on June 17, while Sinyabi will find another national title clash to top his show.

“Yes I have spoken to XP and asked them to swap the bouts, with him taking over the Nxoshe-Ngamntwini fight, while I take the bout they were going to make their top main clash,” said Sinyabi.

However, he declined to say which bout would headline the show, saying the issue was still being discussed with Boxing SA for approval.

Since Sinyabi retired as a boxer after an illustrious career that included two national titles, few boxers have been able to emulate him.

Despite the setback of having to postpone his debut tournament, he has vowed to soldier on and make a mark in boxing promotion by organising electrifying shows.

“I do not want to simply be taken as one of the promoters but to stand out from the rest as I used to during my fighting days. I am striving to make MMT Promotions as the premier boxing promoter in the land.”

The rest of the bouts initially scheduled for this Sunday will be moved to the July 1 show.
