Ngam in frontline for top post

Three in line for Warriors assistant coach

-

has spent many years developing up-and-coming talent from across the region and helping Border punch well above their weight in various competitions.

He has led the team to two one-day titles in recent years, but has always maintained that he is extremely happy at Border Cricket.

EP coach Botha would be an obvious candidate having coached the Warriors previously before Maketa and being the most experienced of the three coaches by far.

He also has a long and distinguished playing career to look back on and it would not be a surprise to see him back in the Warriors set-up.

Academy coach Ngam is possibly the front runner, with age on his side and a massive passion for the game shown by his work done in Alice since arriving at Fort Hare in 2008.

In 2009 first batch of players arrived at the academy and since then Ngam has played an integral role in nurturing exciting up-and-coming talent, with a large number of players moving on to bigger things after going through the system.

Although refusing to confirm the speculation, respected cricket authority Greg Hayes who has worked closely with him at Fort Hare for many years, admitted the loss of Ngam would be a blow to the university, but a well-deserved appointment.

“I think it would be recognition for the wonderful work he has done at the academy and it would also be a huge motivation for him in terms of his future goals of trying to get to the top as a coach, it would be wonderful for him,” explained Hayes.

“Having come from a rural background himself he is passionate about helping guys who are less fortunate than others to try and achieve what they are capable of doing.

“Mfuneko has always prided himself as being a really top bowling coach and he has certainly produced some quality fast bowlers, but I feel all round he would be a great asset to the Warriors if he got in there.”

Today's announcement will start at 9am in the President Suite on the second floor of the Graeme Pollock Pavilion.
