EFF top brass will today convene and preside over five Eastern Cape regional assemblies, where new leaders will be elected.

Commander-in-chief Julius Malema is expected to address more than 100 delegates at the Buffalo City Metro regional assembly at the Steve Biko Centre in Ginsberg in King William’s Town today.

Deputy president Floyd Shivambu is expected to be in Port Elizabeth to ensure the Nelson Mandela Bay regional assembly runs smoothly today, while he is expected to address delegates in Matatiele in Alfred Ndzo tomorrow.

EFF national chairman Dali Mpofu will address the Chris Hani regional assembly in Komani, while treasurer-general LeighAnn Mathys will be in Mthatha to preside over the O R Tambo regional assembly, both tomorrow.

EFF provincial coordinator Yazini Tetyana said the party was due to hold eight elective regional assemblies, with five to be conducted today and tomorrow

“The Eastern Cape has eight regions that are due for assemblies but this weekend we will be doing five. In BCM, the assembly expects to have more than 100 delegates which will deliberate on issues affecting their communities in governance and other social ills,” said Tetyana.

The assemblies come almost two years after the EFF’s central command team disbanded its Eastern Cape executive and all regional structures in the province in preparation for next year’s general and provincial elections.

At the time, the party said branches had been formed in a hurry in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

Tetyana yesterday said the party had grown positively since 2016.

The party has about 78 councillors in the province, with a large influence in the governing of Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Accompanying Malema at the BCM assembly will be Mathapelo Sawisa, Thilivhali Mulaudzi and Dr Muyiseni Ndlozi. In the Bay, Shivhambu will be accompanied by Mgcini Tshwaku and Thembi Msane.
